One of the main reasons Americans relocate to Spain is the lower cost of living compared with many U.S. cities. Housing is usually the largest expense: rent in Madrid or Barcelona often falls in the EUR 1,200-EUR 2,000 range for a central apartment, while smaller cities may be closer to EUR 700-EUR 1,000.

Food, public transportation, healthcare, and entertainment are generally cheaper than in the United States, and dining out is often more affordable as well. Salaries in Spain also tend to be lower than in the U.S., which is why many Americans relocate with remote income, retirement funds, or business revenue.

With realistic budgeting and the right city choice, Spain can be one of the more cost-effective Western European options for Americans.
